Comprehensive User Journey Map

Discover & Define

Following good process is important to me as a designer. I see the first ‘diamond’ of the double diamond process as the foundation of a building. Without it, you can build a pretty house, but it will likely fall apart after some use. The first goal of the design cycle is to make sure we have enough context to create the right thing. Later, we ensure the thing is designed right.

This project was focused on addressing usability concerns with the Da Vinci Xi surgical robot (one of the 3 components that make up the Da Vinci Xi the system)

The journey map above links user workflow tasks to time-on-task metrics, positive & negative experiences, and data analytics.

I began by gathering user insights through interviews and card sort exercises with surgeons, staff, and trainers. I reviewed data mined from systems in the field. I gathered a team to, together, synthesize the information and validate the first iterations of the maps with internal SMEs.

I led a team with the goal of defining & scoping the problem space. We analyzed the most severe negative experiences and paired them with the business goals to generate top areas of opportunity.

These top areas of opportunity centered the focus of the development team around the vital few and were shared to leadership as our design vision moving into the next stage of design.

In 2022, the team reviews my next iteration of the journey map as we work on yet another future-forward design spin.
